How do I care for cast iron garden furniture?

Cast iron requires periodic inspection of the paint layer to prevent surface oxidation from developing on the metal. Keeping the pieces clean and storing them under cover during harsh winter months preserves the structural integrity. Applying suitable protective coatings when necessary helps maintain the finish without obscuring the original foundry details. Proper placement on dry paving prevents moisture from rising continuously through the feet.

Can these furniture sets stay outside year-round?

Heavy cast iron and stone combinations withstand outdoor placement well due to their substantial weight and durable materials. However, extreme frost can occasionally affect older stone tops or trapped moisture within hollow metal sections. Wirework and painted finishes benefit from sheltered storage during the coldest months to prevent unnecessary weathering. Protecting vulnerable surfaces ensures the longevity of the original materials.

How do I distinguish Victorian sets from later pieces?

Victorian examples often display heavier cast iron framing with distinct gothic, classical, or ornate foliate patterns. The weight and depth of the casting relief generally diminish in later twentieth-century productions. Construction fasteners and assembly methods also provide clues, with nineteenth-century pieces utilising specific bolt types and structural bracing. Comparing the decorative motifs against known period design catalogues confirms the era.

What is the difference between a bistro set and a dining set?

A bistro set consists of a smaller table and two chairs designed for compact spaces or casual outdoor seating. These sets prioritise portability and a smaller footprint. Garden dining sets feature larger tables paired with four or more chairs, built for formal outdoor meals and larger gatherings. Their substantial weight reflects their permanent placement on a terrace or lawn.
