How do I hang a heavy metal chandelier?

Ceiling fixtures require direct attachment to a timber joist or structural ceiling noggining using a weight-rated ceiling hook. The electrical supply must be supported independently by the chain rather than the flex. Professional installation by a qualified electrician is essential for older fixtures to ensure the structural fixings and internal wiring meet current safety standards.

Can these old fixtures use modern bulbs?

Most surviving fixtures have been rewired for modern electrical standards while retaining their original lamp holders. Low wattage LED candles or golf ball bulbs fit most antique sockets without altering the appearance. Check the maximum wattage recommendations of the specific fixture before installing higher output modern bulbs to protect delicate wiring and original finishes.

How should I clean gilt bronze and brass?

Dusting with a dry, soft brush prevents the accumulation of grime in the detailed recesses of cast metalwork. Avoid abrasive metal polishes that strip away original gilding and patination. Water and chemical cleaners damage painted toleware and fragile crystal drops, so damp cleaning should be approached with extreme caution.

What defines an Edwardian wall light?

These pieces often feature paired arms and neat backplates designed for domestic hallways. They sit chronologically between the ornate excess of late Victorian design and the streamlined forms of the 1920s.
