What is an antique leaf mirror?

An antique leaf mirror is a historic looking glass featuring wooden frames carved with botanical foliage, leaves, and floral motifs. These pieces typically date from the eighteenth to the early twentieth century and rely on giltwood or gesso finishes. They serve both decorative and functional roles, historically placed above fireplaces or console tables to amplify natural daylight within formal rooms.

Where should I hang an overmantel mirror?

Overmantel mirrors are traditionally positioned directly above a fireplace mantelpiece to anchor the central wall of a reception room. Their generous proportions reflect surrounding interior architecture and spread illumination. Ensure secure wall fixings support the considerable weight of timber, gesso, and glass frames before installation.

How do I clean a giltwood frame?

Dust giltwood frames gently using a soft, dry brush to prevent damage to delicate gesso relief and gold leaf layers. Avoid moisture, commercial cleaning solutions, and abrasive cloths entirely. Preserving the fragile historic surface maintains the integrity and visual warmth of the original gilding.
