What is an antique jug used for?

These vessels served various functions across domestic settings, from pouring milk, cream, water, and ale to holding wine during formal dining. Many examples also functioned as commemorative items, sporting trophies, or decorative mantle pieces. Over time, their roles shifted from purely utilitarian kitchenware to status symbols displayed on sideboards or utilised during afternoon tea.

How do I identify a Georgian jug?

Georgian pieces often exhibit restrained neoclassical lines, simple bulbous or helmet-shaped profiles, and hallmarks on silver examples that indicate the assay office and year of production. Earthenware versions from this period frequently feature hand-painted polychrome decoration or early black transfer printing. Examining the base and interior wear patterns helps distinguish these eighteenth-century forms from later nineteenth-century revivals.

How do I care for an antique ceramic jug?

Wash ceramic and glass vessels gently by hand using lukewarm water and mild soap, avoiding harsh scrubbing that might damage historic glazes, enamels, or gilding. Metal jugs require specific care depending on whether they are silver, brass, or pewter. Keep pieces away from direct sunlight and sudden temperature fluctuations to preserve the stability of the glaze and any applied handles.

What defines Art Nouveau metal jugs?

Art Nouveau examples showcase organic forms, flowing floral relief designs, and whiplash curves executed in copper, brass, or mixed metals. Workshops of this period embraced natural asymmetry and tactile hammered surfaces. These pieces reflect a distinct departure from rigid Victorian symmetry towards nature-inspired craftsmanship.
