How do I hang a heavy wooden icon?

Most antique icon painting examples on wood panels require sturdy picture wire or direct wall-mounting brackets suited to their weight. Ensure the hanging hardware engages securely with the wooden frame or backplate rather than relying on glued elements. Keep the panels away from direct sunlight and fluctuating heat sources to prevent the wood from warping or the paint layers from cracking over time.

Are these panels painted on wood or canvas?

The majority of pieces utilise prepared wooden panels as the primary support, though occasional examples employ canvas stretched over frames. Wood offers the traditional rigid foundation required for layered tempera and gold leaf. Inspect the reverse of the panel to understand its construction and check for original strengthening battens that kept the wood flat.

What is an oklad on an icon?

An oklad is a decorative metal cover fitted over the surface of an icon, typically fashioned from brass, silver, or gilt metal. It protects the delicate paint beneath while leaving the holy figures' faces and hands visible. These metal coverings often feature repoussé ornamentation and provide a distinct layer of craftsmanship separate from the painted imagery.

How should I clean an old icon painting?

Surface dust should be removed gently using a soft, dry brush without applying moisture or cleaning solutions. Introducing liquids can damage fragile historic tempera and historic varnishes. Consult a professional conservator if the panel requires deeper cleaning or stabilisation to preserve the underlying pigments safely.
