How were antique hand painted panels used?

These panels served primarily as decorative wall art, folding room dividers, or integrated components within larger furniture pieces like cabinets and clocks. Some items functioned as architectural salvage or signage, fulfilling both practical and aesthetic roles in period interiors.

How do I care for a painted leather screen?

Painted leather requires stable humidity and protection from direct sunlight to prevent the pigment and leather from drying out and cracking. Dust the surface gently with a dry, soft cloth and avoid chemical cleaning agents that might dissolve historic paint layers.

How can I tell Victorian panels from Edwardian ones?

Victorian pieces often lean towards heavier, ornate framing and deep polychrome palettes, reflecting revivals of historical styles. Edwardian items frequently display lighter satinwood frames, delicate floral motifs, and brighter pastel tones characteristic of the early twentieth century.

Where were porcelain plaques displayed?

Porcelain plaques were commonly flush-mounted into the brass housings of carriage clocks or inlaid directly into mahogany and satinwood display cabinets. They allowed makers to incorporate miniature fine art portraits and landscapes into functional household objects.
