What games did these boxes typically include?

These containers usually house equipment for chess, checkers, backgammon, whist and cribbage. Folding boards often serve a dual purpose for both chess and backgammon. Additional wells accommodate bone dominoes, whist markers, dice and mother-of-pearl gaming counters.

How do I date a games box?

Dating relies on timber choice, lock signatures and prevailing design styles. Rosewood and coromandel point strongly to the Victorian era. Lighter oak and simpler brass fittings generally indicate Edwardian production around the turn of the twentieth century.

Were these boxes used in domestic settings?

Middle and upper-class households relied on these compendiums for evening parlour entertainment. They sat on side tables in drawing rooms and country houses. Guests would select a pastime from the fitted trays, returning the components to their designated slots after play concluded.

How should I maintain the timber surface?

Apply a microcrystalline wax sparingly to nourish the polished wood and protect the veneer from drying out. Avoid placing boxes in direct sunlight or near heat sources. Dust intricate brass mounts and carved bone elements gently with a soft, dry brush.
