How do I fit a modern mattress?

Many antique four poster beds were constructed for historical dimensions that differ from standard modern sizes. Custom mattress solutions are frequently necessary to ensure a proper fit within the wooden or metal rails. Checking the internal width and length dimensions before purchase prevents sizing discrepancies. Modifying concealed support slats allows modern bases to sit securely inside the antique frame.

Are these beds difficult to assemble?

Most antique four poster frames rely on traditional pegged mortise and tenon joints or heavy iron bolts. Assembling them requires patience, correct tools, and typically two people to manage the weight of the tester and posts. Careful alignment of the side rails and headboard ensures the canopy remains square and stable. Professional installation is often recommended for larger 17th-century oak or heavy brass structures.

How do I care for the wood?

Maintaining antique timber requires stable room humidity to prevent the oak or mahogany from splitting or warping. Gentle dusting with a dry cloth preserves the patina without stripping natural oils. Avoiding direct sunlight and heating vents protects the polished surfaces and lacquer work. Occasional application of suitable wax helps nourish older dry wood.

What is an Anglo-Indian bed?

Anglo-Indian four poster beds combine British colonial forms with traditional local craftsmanship from the Raj period. They are typically fashioned from rich mahogany and feature deep, distinctive carving. These pieces were constructed for use in warmer climates, often incorporating lighter proportions or open designs. Their distinct aesthetic merges European room layouts with overseas woodworking traditions.
