Are these lamps converted from oil?

Many of the nineteenth-century examples started life as oil-burning lamps before later conversion to electricity. This adaptation process preserves the original brass reservoirs, burners, and glass fonts while updating the internal wiring for modern use. Other items were manufactured as electric fixtures from the outset, particularly those dating from the twentieth century and the Art Deco period.

How do I identify a Victorian lamp?

Victorian pieces typically display heavy brass or bronze construction, often combined with cranberry glass, opaline glass, or hand-painted porcelain bodies. They frequently incorporate functional brass galleries and adjustable mechanisms. Earlier examples from this era tend to feature elaborate floral hand-painting and substantial metal casting compared to later Edwardian designs.

What are Kashmiri lamps made from?

Kashmiri lamps on this page consist of hand-painted wooden bodies produced during the early twentieth century. They display detailed floral decoration in green, gold, and multi-coloured pigments. These pieces reflect distinct regional craft traditions that differ from standard European porcelain and brass lighting.

Can I replace a missing glass shade?

Sourcing a replacement shade requires matching the fitter size, nineteenth-century or early twentieth-century collar dimensions, and glass type such as opaline or cranberry. Original shades feature specific hand-blown characteristics and hand-painted floral details that distinguish them from modern reproductions. Careful measurement of the existing gallery ensures a secure fit for any replacement glass.
