What fits inside an antique engraved card case?

These cases were originally sized for nineteenth century visiting cards, which measured smaller than modern business cards. Slim calling cards or folded notes slip easily into the primary compartment. Some examples include internal dividers or silk linings intended to keep paper items crisp and separate during travel.

How do I clean silver card cases?

Gentle dusting with a soft microfibre cloth removes surface grime without wearing down the delicate engraved lines. Avoid harsh abrasive dips that strip away dark patina and niello inlay. Professional silver polish should be used sparingly, keeping paste away from hinges and inset stones like mother of pearl or Connemara marble.

Can I carry cigarettes in these cases?

Many items listed as card cases share dimensions with historical cigarette holders, and slim twentieth century pieces accommodate modern smokes. Check internal width and depth before attempting daily use. Older Victorian visiting card cases feature narrow profiles that suit paper better than bulkier tobacco products.

How do I identify the date of a case?

English silver carries hallmarks including a specific date letter that corresponds to the year the piece was assayed. Comparing this stamp against standard hallmarking charts reveals the exact year of production. Stylistic markers such as Art Deco geometry or Victorian Gothic Revival scrolling also help narrow down the decade of manufacture when stamps are worn.
