What is a longcase clock?

A longcase clock is a tall, free-standing timepiece driven by weights and a pendulum enclosed in a wooden trunk. They measure several feet in height and stand directly on the floor. These clocks serve as major furniture items in a hallway or principal room, combining cabinet making with precision mechanics.

How do I wind a mechanical clock?

Mechanical clocks require a key or crank to wind the weights or mainsprings depending on the movement type. Care must be taken not to overwind the mechanism. Establishing a regular routine for winding ensures the movement continues to function reliably without placing strain on the internal gears.

Where should I place a clock?

Clocks need a stable, level surface or a secure wall fixing away from direct sunlight, dampness, and rapid temperature fluctuations. Longcase clocks require solid floor contact to keep the pendulum swinging evenly. Placement should also consider acoustic reach, as striking mechanisms and ticking sounds carry through residential spaces.

How do I identify the period?

Dating relies on stylistic clues in the case design, such as Georgian mahogany veneers, Victorian marble housings, or Edwardian proportions. Dial materials and signature styles also provide chronological markers. Examining the construction methods inside the case helps confirm the era of manufacture and any subsequent alterations.
