How do I hang a heavy brass chandelier?

Heavy brass and bronze chandeliers require secure installation directly into ceiling joists or robust structural blocking using appropriate steel hardware. Professional electrician installation is essential to support the substantial weight safely. Ensuring the electrical junction box is rated for heavy ceiling fixtures prevents structural failure. Proper chain and wiring adjustments ensure the fixture hangs at the correct height for the room.

Can these antique fixtures use modern bulbs?

Most antique fixtures accept standard modern bulbs provided the Edison screw or bayonet sockets match current regional standards. Consulting an electrician ensures the internal wiring safely accommodates contemporary bulb wattages. LED bulbs are frequently utilised in these fixtures because they emit minimal heat, protecting fragile elements like vintage glass shades and silk cords. Preserving original sockets is possible with modern adapter solutions if desired.

How do I clean cut glass crystal lustres?

Cleaning crystal lustres involves removing them gently from the brass frame and washing them in warm water with a mild, non-abrasive detergent. Drying each piece thoroughly with a lint-free cloth restores maximum brilliance before reattachment. Leaving lustres on the fixture while cleaning requires a spray solution and a catch basin underneath to protect surrounding surfaces. Avoiding harsh chemical cleaners prevents damage to the aged brass and gilt finishes.

What is the difference between a chandelier and a lantern?

Chandeliers feature multiple branching arms designed to hold several exposed or shaded light bulbs radiating outwards from a central axis. They are typically open structures emphasising metalwork and crystal arrangements. Lanterns are enclosed fixtures where the light source sits inside a glass-panelled frame, such as hall lanterns and hanging star lanterns. This enclosed design directs light downwards and protects the flame or bulb from drafts.
