A purdonium is a dedicated Victorian coal box designed with a sloping front drop-down door and an interior metal liner. It typically includes a matching shovel stored inside. These pieces kept coal dust contained and sat neatly beside the hearth as refined furniture rather than plain utility items.

How do I clean a copper bin?

Copper and brass bins respond best to mild soapy water and gentle drying to preserve their historic surface. Avoid harsh abrasive cleaners that strip the natural patina accumulated over decades. Leaving the aged surface intact maintains the character of the metal and shows its age honestly.

Can these bins hold logs?

Many copper and brass buckets listed as coal bins function equally well for holding fireplace logs and kindling. Their durable metal construction withstands the rough weight of firewood. Wooden coal boxes with interior metal liners also serve well for dry log storage.

Are these pieces waterproof?

Most metal coal buckets and copper cauldrons hold water effectively, which explains why many owners repurpose them as large plant jardinieres. Wooden coal boxes, however, generally rely on removable metal liners to handle damp contents. Checking for an interior liner ensures wood does not warp from moisture when used for plants.
