What is a bouillotte lamp?

A bouillotte lamp is a traditional lighting fixture featuring a central column, multiple candle or bulb branches, and an adjustable shade. Originally designed for card games and desk work, it directs light precisely where needed. Most examples combine brass or gilt metal with painted toleware shades. They serve as functional desk lamps and decorative table lighting.

How do you adjust the shade?

The shade slides along a vertical metal rod running through the centre of the lamp. A screw key or friction collar holds the shade at the desired height. Adjusting the height allows the user to control the spread and intensity of the downward light. This mechanism remains a defining functional feature of the design.

Where were bouillotte lights made?

Many surviving bouillotte lights originate from France, reflecting nineteenth-century and early twentieth-century stylistic periods such as French Empire and Neoclassical. British makers also produced similar designs influenced by Regency styles. They appear in various forms including standard lamps, desk lamps, and multi-branch candelabra. Their origins dictate the specific metal finishes and shade colours present.

How do I style a bouillotte lamp?

Place a bouillotte lamp on a study desk, a side table, or a console to provide focused downward illumination. The classic combination of brass and green toleware complements traditional and transitional interiors. Ensure the scale of the lamp matches the surface furniture. The adjustable shade allows you to balance direct task lighting with ambient room glow.
