What is a mantel lustre?

A mantel lustre is an ornamental glass vase decorated with hanging crystal prisms that catch the light. They sat in pairs on drawing room fireplaces during the nineteenth century. These pieces functioned purely as decorative objects rather than light sources, though some held candles.

How do I clean antique glass?

Clean antique glass gently using lukewarm water and mild soap with a soft cloth. Avoid harsh chemicals that damage delicate gilding and enamel work. Remove hanging prisms individually if necessary to clean them thoroughly before reattaching them to the brass fittings.

Are these lights wired for modern use?

Many antique chandeliers and lamps adapt readily to modern electrical standards by retaining their original brass or copper frames. Professional rewiring ensures safety while preserving historical metalwork and glass components. Consult a qualified electrician to inspect vintage fixtures before installation in a domestic setting.
