How do you clean an old wood panel painting?

Surface dust is gently removed using a soft, dry brush without applying moisture or domestic cleaning agents. Any deeper grime or discolored varnish requires professional conservation to prevent damaging the underlying paint layer.

Why were artists painting on wood instead of canvas?

Wood panels provided a completely rigid and smooth surface that allowed for meticulous detail and prevented the sagging associated with woven textiles. This traditional support was favored for centuries before canvas became the dominant material for large-scale paintings.

Can carved wooden panels be hung directly on a wall?

Many carved architectural fragments and decorative panels are fitted with hanging hardware for direct wall display. Heavier elements may need secure wall anchors to support their weight safely.

How do you check a wood panel for past damage?

Inspect the reverse side of the wood for splits, warping, or evidence of past repairs using additional battens. Stable panels remain relatively flat and retain their original thickness across the entire surface.
