How do adjustable shelves work?

Shelves rest on adjustable supports fitted into the interior walls of the bookcase. This allows you to alter the height between boards to suit different book sizes. Traditional systems rely on brass pins or wooden notches to secure each shelf at the desired level.

What woods were commonly used?

Cabinet makers predominantly used mahogany, oak, and walnut for these bookcases. Pine served as a common secondary timber or for simpler pieces. Finer examples frequently feature burr walnut veneer to create decorative surface patterns.

Are these pieces strictly Victorian?

While Victorian and Edwardian pieces form the majority of the selection, examples also span the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Styles range from Georgian influences to Queen Anne Revival and French Provincial. Dates extend from the mid nineteenth century into the nineteen thirties.

How do I place an open bookcase?

Open bookcases suit studies, libraries, and living rooms where easy access to books matters most. Ensure the placement avoids direct sunlight to protect the timber and veneer. Tall and breakfront formats require adequate wall space to display their proportions.
