Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

These mirrors were produced in the 19th century for large estate homes, characterized by substantial proportions, oval frames made of wood and gesso, and gold leaf gilded finishes designed to enhance natural light in grand rooms.

Victorian gilt mirrors were constructed using timber backings and frames moulded with gesso, which was then layered with gold leaf. The reflective silvered glass plates often utilized mercury or early silver nitrate coatings.

Authentic pieces exhibit signs of natural ageing, including gentle cracking in the gesso surface, oxidation or foxing spots on the original glass plate, and dark wood backing boards secured with historical iron fastenings.

A pair of large oval mirrors can be positioned symmetrically on either side of a central feature, such as a fireplace alcove or entrance hall corridor, or mounted above a long sideboard to balance visual proportion.

Giltwood frames should be cleaned strictly with a dry, soft microfibre cloth or feather duster, avoiding water or chemical sprays that can dissolve gesso and gold leaf. Glass plates should be cleaned by spraying cleaner sparingly onto a cloth rather than directly onto the mirror.
