Rococo giltwood mirrors originated in 18th-century France and spread across Europe, characterised by elaborate asymmetrical scrollwork, naturalistic foliage, and dramatic crestings. Designed to capture and multiply light from candles, these frames served as central decorative features in formal reception rooms.

Traditional giltwood frames were carved from softwoods such as pine or lime before being coated with multiple layers of gesso. Once sanded smooth, a layer of coloured clay bole was applied, followed by thin sheets of real gold leaf which were either water-gilded and burnished or oil-gilded.
