Worcester Porcelain Chestnut Basket, James Giles, C. 1770.

A fine and rare Worcester porcelain dessert basket, c. 1770. Hand painted in the London workshop of James Giles, with a a spray of flowers, within an elaborate gilt scroll and flowered panel, on a underglaze blue scale ground. The lattice work, painted with sprigs of flowers, including a divergent tulip, beneath a gilded, underglaze blue scale rim.
 
The exterior of the basket, applied with moulded flowerheads, enamelled in turquoise, or ‘sky blue’, with puce centres.
 
Branch handles to either end of the basket, heightened in gilt, and terminating in brightly enamelled flowers and leaves.
 
Underglaze blue hatched square mark to the underside of the base.
 
Length – 18.7 cm, 7 3/8”.
 
Width – 15.2 cm, 6”.
 
Height – 8 cm, 3 1/8”.
 
Condition – Small chip to one flower repaired. Otherwise excellent condition.
