Rosewood French Mantle Clock

1900 - 1920
Description

This stunning small mantle clock is in great original condition, with only the smallest flick of veneer missing from the top at the rear. This isn’t something that’s noticeable.

The clock is fronted by a 2.5inch round dial with a gilded engraved dial mask, Roman numerals and fine steel hands. The movement Stamped V.A.P Breveté 465 is in fantastic working order powered by what’s is typically known as a London style pendulum and Single train spring. The movement winds and adjusts from the rear. The movement is very much the quality and style of a good quality carriage clock.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Nineteenth-century French mantel clocks are characterised by precise pendulum-driven movements housed within structured cases, often featuring detailed brass embellishments and clear enamel dials.

These timepieces were typically crafted using dense hardwoods such as rosewood or mahogany veneers, combined with cast or engraved brass mounts and porcelain enamel dials.

Authentic examples feature natural wood grain variations in the veneer, hand-engraved or stamped brass components, and traditional key-wound mechanical pendulum movements.

Positioning the clock centrally on a modern fireplace mantelpiece or atop a dark wood sideboard creates a focal point that balances historic design with modern decor.

Position the clock away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent wood veneer cracking, and gently dust the case using a dry, soft microfibre cloth.
