19th Century Rocking Horse

1920 - 1940
For Sale by Moxhams Antiques
Description

A handsome large carved wooden rocking horse by J. R. Smith of Liverpool on its original stand with turned pillars and the head slightly tilted. The horse has been sensitively restored retaining much of its original paint and brass studs; we used old horse tack for the stirrup leathers and harness.

J. R. Smith rocking horses are known for their extra detailed carving and are similar in quality to horses by Ayres and Lines.

The brass brackets, the back turned pillar and the mane and tail hair are replacements.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Invented in the late 19th century, safety stand rocking horses replaced traditional curved bow rockers with a stationary wooden frame and iron swinging arms to prevent tipping and conserve floor space.

These items were typically carved from hollowed or solid timber blocks, finished with gesso and hand-painted dapple grey patterns, and fitted with real horsehair manes, glass eyes, and leather saddlery.

Authentic period pieces feature hand-carved anatomical details, cast iron bracket hardware, natural horsehair trimmings, leather tack attached with brass studs, and visible paint craquelure.

Position the piece as a sculptural accent in a bay window, nursery, or hallway alcove to add historic texture and visual interest to contemporary or traditional decor schemes.

Keep the item away from direct heat sources to prevent wood movement, nourish leather components with a conservation wax, and gently dust horsehair and painted surfaces with a soft brush.
