Late Regency Mahogany Centre Table

19th century
Description

A late regency centre or breakfast table executed in faded mahogany with a lovely original dry surface and fine patina c.1825

The finely figured top has faded delightfully to a perfect caramel colour, making this piece extremely attractive. The base is well-proportioned and the table stands upon a knopped pedestal stem and three legs-the traditional tripod form. The legs join the pedestal with interesting “hipped” terminals and there is panelled decoration on both the hips and the ends of the legs themselves which terminate in fine brass castors.

This highly adaptable form of table can be used as a centre table in a hallway or other large space, as a small dining table or even as a library table as appropriate. Tables of this sort were produced by all of the great makers of this period and fine examples like this one are as desirable now as they were when first made.

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Regency centre table is a circular or octagonal table produced during the early 19th century, designed to sit in the centre of a hallway, salon, or drawing room. They frequently featured central pedestal supports and tilt-top mechanisms to save space when pushed against a wall.

Regency tilt-top tables were predominantly constructed from dense timbers such as mahogany, rosewood, and oak. Accent features often included brass castors, brass toe caps, and crossbanded veneers along the table border.

Authentic Regency pieces typically feature hand-cut joinery, solid timber or thick cut veneers, original brass latch mechanisms under the table top, and hand-cast brass castors on splayed legs.

A Regency centre table works as a focal point in a large foyer or formal living room. Placing a ceramic vessel or stack of books on the surface anchors the historical element within a contemporary setting.

Mahogany should be kept away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent timber movement and fading. Regular dusting with a soft cloth and occasional applications of beeswax nourish the wood and preserve the surface finish.
