Regency Mahogany Bergère Library Armchair (In the Manner of Gillows)

19th century
Description

A fine regency mahogany bergère library armchair in the manner of gillows c.1825.

This form of library chair with caned panels is known as a bergère and, due to examples that were supplied to Ashburnham Place and to the Earl of Uxbridge, the Gillows estimate sketch books refer to related patterns of chairs as Ashburnham or Uxbridge models respectively. They were first supplied by the firm in 1803 and proved to be extremely popular. It is unusual for these chairs to feature carving on the crest rails to the back and our example also features fluted uprights.

The front legs and arm supports are finely turned and the back legs have a rather exaggerated curve which is both dramatic and attractive without compromising the structural stability of the chair.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Regency bergere armchair typically features an exposed wooden frame, woven cane back and side panels, and turned or swept legs, designed to accommodate fitted cushions for library or drawing room seating.

Traditional construction utilises solid mahogany or rosewood frames, hand-woven cane panels for lightness, and brass castors attached to turned or splayed legs.

Authentic period pieces display hand-carved crest rail details, original brass castors, precise mortise and tenon joinery, and natural hand-caning with historic patination on the timber frame.

Position the chair alongside a contemporary side table or within a reading nook, paired with a textured cushion to contrast the structured dark wood and delicate cane work.

Keep the timber clean using a soft dry cloth and natural beeswax, while gently humidifying or misting the cane periodically to prevent brittleness and breakage.
