There is a hint of Picasso in this strong and gorgeous French abstracted cubist still life from the 1940s. Perfectly composed, it depicts a slice of melon, a jug, and a fig on a table. Dynamic and bold, the work has an incredible vibrancy and presence.
The painting came from the estate of the renowned surrealist painter Lucien Mathelin (1905-1981), but does not resemble his work: it was certainly painted by a fellow artist friend or someone in his circle. Mathelin was born into a family of artists, collaborated with Raoul Dufy, worked in Montmartre and was well connected on the artistic scene of Paris.
The pastel on paper is unsigned and measures 62 x 47 cm at sight. It is presented in a well worn but lovely late 18th Century gilt frame. The overall framed size is 76 x 62 cm.
