Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A door porter, or weighted doorstop, originated in the eighteenth century and gained widespread popularity during the nineteenth century to keep heavy timber doors open. Featuring integrated handles and ornate motifs such as putti, animals, or scrollwork, they combined practical function with interior decoration.

Traditional doorstops were cast using solid brass or bronze poured into sand moulds to produce a dense, heavy structure. Following casting, pieces were hand-finished, chased, and polished to refine the decorative surface relief.

Authentic period doorstops display crisp relief detailing combined with natural wear or oxidisation on the base and recessed areas. They typically feature heavy solid metal construction, hand-filed seam marks, and occasionally registration marks cast into the rear or underside.

A decorative brass doorstop can be positioned alongside interior doorways, placed near a fireplace hearth, or styled atop a stack of large art books. The warm metallic surface introduces textural depth and historical interest when set against contemporary neutral backgrounds.

Dust regularly using a dry, soft microfibre cloth to prevent ambient dirt accumulation. To preserve an established natural patina, avoid abrasive chemical cleaners; if a polished finish is required, apply a specialised brass polish sparingly with a cloth and buff clean.
