Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A door porter, commonly known as a doorstop, became popular in the nineteenth century for propping open heavy timber doors. Often cast in solid brass or iron, these items feature decorative motifs such as cherubs, foliage, or mythical figures, combined with a high handle for ease of lifting.

These functional objects were typically produced using sand-casting techniques where molten brass was poured into sand moulds. The cast metal was then turned out, hand-finished to refine surface details, and weighted at the base to ensure stability against heavy draughts.

Authentic period pieces display crisp casting detail alongside natural wear patterns on the base and handle from handling. Look for unevenness consistent with hand-finishing, subtle casting seams, and dark oxidisation lodged within deep relief areas.

Position the doorstop alongside original architectural timber doors in entryways, hallway corridors, or reception rooms. It can also serve as a hearth accent beside a fireplace or function as a heavy decorative bookend on low shelving.

Remove surface dust using a dry microfiber cloth or soft-bristled brush to clear intricate relief carving. To preserve historical patina, avoid abrasive chemical polishes and use gentle microcrystalline wax if surface protection is desired.
