Description

Greyhound with Ball in Bronze by Pierre-Jules Mène (1810-1879)

This delightful greyhound has been captured in a playful pose by the sculptor Pierre-Jules Mène, one of the foremost members of the school of French 'Animalier' Sculptors and a specialist of smaller bronze pieces. He is best known as one of the finest and most prolific animal sculptors of all time.

The piece retains a lovely highlighted aged patina.

The dog's ball rests on the decorated base that has a moulded edge and is signed P J Mène.

All in very good condition with only a minor loss of the tip of the dog's tail (please see photos). Being hard to detect, this does not take away from the overall beauty of the piece.

A piece of exceptional craftmanship.

Shipping will be £50 for delivery to an address in England, France, Germany and Italy.

We can provide quotes to the rest of the UK, Europe and worldwide

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

The Animalier movement originated in 19th-century France, characterized by artists who specialized in accurate, naturalistic depictions of animals. Sculptors such as Pierre-Jules Mene gained prominence by creating detailed bronze studies of horses, dogs, and wildlife, catering to a growing middle-class demand for cabinet art.

19th-century bronzes were typically created using lost-wax casting or sand casting techniques using an alloy of copper and tin. After casting, the cold bronze was hand-chased to sharpen details and treated with chemical solutions to produce a patinated finish ranging from mid-brown to dark green.

Authentic Mene bronzes display crisp anatomical detail, precise surface tooling, and integrated signatures cast directly into the base. Original castings feature well-proportioned patination and show evidence of traditional foundry hand-finishing along seam lines and edges.

Small animal bronzes work well placed on a library shelf, desk, or mantlepiece, paired alongside stacked art books, wooden antiques, or framed prints. Their warm metal tone offers textural contrast when styled on marble surfaces or painted cabinetry.

Bronze sculptures should be regularly dusted with a dry microfibre cloth or soft brush. To preserve the original patina, apply a thin layer of microcrystalline wax or clear beeswax annually, buffing gently once dry, and avoid liquid solvents or abrasive cleaners.
