Description

This intricately hand-carved gilt console table, circa 1880 and made in the Roman style. The beautiful curved legs are expertly crafted with a pink marble surface sitting on top. At the top of each leg is a face, with a shell in the centre of the serpentine front.

The item is in very good condition for age and use. No damage, repair or restoration.

FAQs

Rococo style console tables from the 19th century feature elaborate C-scrolls, acanthus leaf carving, shell motifs, and asymmetrical ornament. They were traditionally paired with fitted marble tops and finished in gilded gesso over wooden frames.

These tables were typically built from carved softwoods or hardwoods coated with layers of gesso, covered in gold leaf gilding, and topped with heavy slabs of natural marble such as Breccia or Rouge Royale.
