Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Georgian side tables produced during the 18th century are characterised by classical proportions, symmetrical designs, and refined woodwork. Often crafted from solid mahogany, these pieces frequently incorporated functional features such as drop flaps or drawers to serve versatile roles in formal living spaces.

High-grade mahogany was the primary timber utilised for Georgian tables, valued for its stability and deep grain. Hand-cut dovetail joints, solid oak or pine drawer linings, and cast brass hardware are standard construction hallmarks of this period.

Authentic 18th-century pieces display signs of historical craftsmanship, including slightly irregular hand-sawn dovetails, hand-planed underside surfaces, and original brass fittings. The timber should exhibit natural surface oxidisation and age-appropriate wear around the feet and hinges.

A Georgian mahogany side table functions effectively as a hallway console, an occasional desk, or a sofa side table in contemporary spaces. Pairing the warm mahogany tone with simple ceramic lamps or contemporary artwork creates a balanced accent piece.

Keep the table away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent timber movement or surface fading. Regular dusting with a soft cloth and periodic application of beeswax polish will preserve the original finish and wood patina.
