Eight 19th Century Mahogany Balloon Back Dining Chairs

19th century
For Sale by Limited Editions
Description

Having just come from our workshops after a clean and light tidy up these eight Balloon Back dining chairs are ready for their next adventure. In mahogany as already mentioned, they have the crown back and a well turned flowing leg. They are a little earlier than some available. They have the serpentine shape to the front of the seats, these seats are very useable but do have some light marking from their previous lives. We think this would clean but you may wish to upholster in a fabric to suit your own colour scheme. Being a knockout seat they are the most economical to do, if that is your choice. The backs are 89cms tall, and the measurements below are on the seat. We have sets of four and six if required and tables to go with. Dont hesitate to give us a call if you would like to discuss.

We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Balloon back chairs emerged during the early 19th century, becoming a dominant design feature of the Victorian era. The style is recognised by its continuous rounded backrest, which narrows at the waist rail to mimic the silhouette of a hot air balloon.

These chairs were primarily crafted from dense hardwoods such as solid mahogany, rosewood, or walnut. Upholstered seats were commonly stuffed with natural materials like horsehair and finished with decorative fabrics or drop-in seat pads.

Authentic period examples feature hand-cut mortise and tenon joinery, subtle variations in turned front legs, and smooth hand-carved waist rails. Additionally, older mahogany exhibits a deep patination that synthetic finishes cannot replicate.

Pairing dark mahogany balloon back chairs with a contemporary oak or marble dining table creates a balanced contrast of eras. Upholstering the seat cushions in contemporary linen or bold geometric fabrics helps bridge traditional furniture with modern aesthetics.

Apply a high-quality beeswax polish periodically along the grain of the timber to preserve the natural lustre and protect the wood from drying out. Upholstered seats should be vacuumed gently with a soft brush attachment and kept out of direct sunlight to prevent fading.
