Cordial glasses became popular in the nineteenth century for serving small amounts of concentrated liqueurs, spirits, or fortified wines after a meal. During the Victorian era, tableware became highly specialised, leading to distinct glassware designs tailored to specific beverages.

These glasses were typically hand-blown using lead crystal or soda glass. Decorative patterns were created using copper-wheel engraving or acid etching to apply intricate floral and botanical motifs directly onto the bowl.

Authentic pieces from around 1880 often show faint hand-finishing marks, such as a smoothed pontil scar beneath the base and slight variations in the wheel-engraved motifs. The glass may also exhibit slight irregularities or small air bubbles indicative of period manufacturing techniques.

These stemware pieces can be displayed on a silver or brass tray atop a dining room sideboard, inside a glazed cabinet, or arranged as functional barware on a drinks trolley.

Antique glass should always be washed by hand in lukewarm water using mild liquid detergent. Dishwashers must be avoided, as high heat and harsh chemicals can cause clouding, etching, or accidental breakage.
