J.w.benson - Petite Sonnerie Carriage Clock

19th century
For Sale by Its About Time
Description

Here we have a fine, quarter chiming or 'petite sonnerie' carriage clock by Drocourt for J.W.Benson.

The fine gilded gorge case is of slightly smaller than average size. The dial is near perfect and free of any chips but with a very faint hairline to the top right corner (very slight). The movement strikes the hours and quarters with the addition of push repeat. The clock has the Drocourt stamp on the back plate and the Drocourt Oval on the reverse of the dial. Alfred and Pierre Drocourt were both superb clockmakers, they had a factory in Saint-Nicolas-d'Ailermont, which was regarded as the most important town for carriage clock manufacturing. The majority of their clocks would go to their Paris premises and dispersed amongst the world's top retailers of that time. They exhibited at the major exhibitions winning a bronze medal at Paris 1867, the Silver at Paris 1878 and the gold at Paris in 1889. The son, Alfred, succeeded his father Pierre sometime in the 1870's. The clock is numbered 16949 . To find a 'petite sonnerie' by J.W.Benson and Drocourt in this condition is quite rare. A truly wonderful clock with a very nice tone to the gongs .

When considering an antique clock for your home it is worth looking into who has restored it. We restore our clocks and fully strip down the movements so we can be sure they will work for many years and give our 24 month guarantee. We are members of the B.H.I (British Horological Institute) and we were chosen by Salvage Hunters TV to restore clocks for them. We are now in our 43 year! at the same address.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A petite sonnerie carriage clock is a nineteenth-century portable spring-driven timepiece equipped with a top carrying handle that automatically strikes the quarter hours and full hours.

These clocks typically feature polished or gilded brass cases, thick bevelled glass viewing panels, and white enamel dials set over precision mechanical brass movements.

Authentic examples feature heavy solid brass cases, hand-cut gear trains, finely bevelled glass, and maker signatures stamped on the backplate or printed on the dial face.

Position the timepiece on a fireplace mantelpiece, executive desk, or styled bookshelf paired with architectural items and hardback books to add structure and history.

Dust the exterior glass and brass case using a dry microfibre cloth, avoid liquid polishes that damage protective lacquers, and have the internal mechanism serviced by a horologist every three to five years.
