Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A smokers bow chair, also referred to as a captains chair, is a low-backed wooden armchair that emerged in Britain during the mid-19th century. It features a heavy, horseshoe-shaped continuous steam-bent crest rail supported by decorative turned spindles and a shaped saddle seat.

These chairs were primarily crafted from native British hardwoods, most commonly beech for the turned spindles and steam-bent rails, and elm for the thick, solid saddle seats. Oak and ash were also utilised depending on the regional workshop.

Authentic period examples demonstrate wedged tenon joinery where the spindles penetrate the crest rail, natural patination on the seat and armrests, and hand-turned leg details. The undersides often show historic hand-planing marks or maker stamps.

A smokers bow chair serves as an effective desk chair in a home study, an accent chair in a hallway, or additional seating around a rustic dining table. Its low profile and ergonomic armrests allow it to fit comfortably beneath standard table heights.

Maintain the wood finish by dusting regularly with a soft lint-free cloth and applying a clear beeswax polish twice a year. Keep the chair away from direct heat sources and high humidity to prevent timber shrinkage or joint splitting.
