Marble and Gilt Portico Clock

19th century
For Sale by Masons Antiques
Description

A really beautiful example of these very elegant clocks.

A marble frame supports a drum-head movement with convex enamelled and arcaded dial. Gilt swags, capitals and finials further enhance and contrast with the marble. Finished with an urn finial to the top. Complete with a sunburst gilt pendulum.

The 8 day movement strikes on the half-hour and the hour on a bell. It has just been fully overhauled by our BHI registered staff and carries our usual 12mth full parts and labour guarantee.

Regrettably, as per usual, our pictures fail to show the true beauty of this clock. It is much, much brighter in real life.

(We are very good at clocks and very bad at photography).

A superb clock in every respect.

All cards accepted.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A portico clock is an architectural style of mantel clock inspired by classical Greek and Roman temple entrances, featuring columns supporting an upper entablature housing the clock movement. Originating in France during the late eighteenth century, these timepieces remained popular through the Louis XVI and Empire periods.

These clocks traditionally combine carved marble or alabaster with gilt bronze, brass, or ormolu mounts. The clock dial is typically enamel or porcelain, often decorated with painted floral detail, while the pendulum and movement incorporate precision brass mechanics.

Authentic examples feature hand-gilded ormolu or brass fittings, heavy natural marble bases with subtle veining, and hand-painted enamel dials with fine steel hands. Examining the movement plate for maker stamps and counting wheels also helps verify age.

Place a portico clock as a central focal point on a fireplace mantelpiece, console table, or sideboard. Pairing it with modern art or contemporary ceramics creates a balanced contrast between historical craftsmanship and clean lines.

Clean marble surfaces using a dry or slightly damp microfibre cloth, avoiding harsh chemical cleaners that etch natural stone. Dust gilt metal mounts using a soft brush, and ensure the mechanical movement is professionally serviced every three to five years.
