Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originally created in the seventeenth century, a bracket clock is a compact table timepiece designed to be placed either on a wall bracket or a flat surface such as a mantelpiece. They typically feature weight or spring-driven mechanical movements encased in decorative timber cases with glass apertures.

Clocks from this era were predominantly constructed using solid hardwoods such as oak, mahogany, and walnut for the outer cabinet. The internal mechanisms were engineered from brass and steel, while dial faces featured silvered brass or porcelain with cast brass bezels and protective glass covers.

Authentic Edwardian models often feature rectangular or arch-topped oak cabinets decorated with carved mouldings, silvered brass dials with etched Arabic or Roman numerals, and separate sub-dials for chime regulation. Additionally, three-winding keyholes on the main dial indicate a movement designed for quarter-hour Westminster chimes.

An antique oak bracket clock functions well as a focal accent on a fireplace mantelpiece, bookshelf, or executive desk. Pairing dark timber horology with modern minimalist elements or traditional leather upholstery creates an engaging balance of texture and historical interest.

Mechanical clocks require regular winding with a matching key and should be set on a level surface to ensure accurate timekeeping. Professional servicing by a horologist is recommended every five to seven years to clean, oil, and adjust the gear train and chime mechanisms.
