A very rare antique Tibetan carpet in near perfect condition. Woven around the early part of the 20th century, smaller Tibetan rugs are more often found than these larger size carpets. More often these large sizes were commissioned for the West in the 1900''s with classical Tibetan motifs and wonderful dyes. The deep black dyes and vivd reds are not as common, usually Tibetan rugs are woven in blues and greens, a wonderful and really beautiful collectable piece.
Tibetan rug and carpet making is an ancient, traditional craft. Tibetan rugs are traditionally made from Tibetan highland sheep''s wool, called changpel. Tibetans use rugs for many purposes ranging from flooring to wall hanging to horse saddles, though the most common use is as a seating carpet.
