Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Georgian serpentine sideboard is an 18th-century storage piece defined by its undulating, wave-like front profile. Popularised by cabinetmakers like George Hepplewhite and Thomas Sheraton, these pieces typically combine central drawer space with flank cupboards or additional drawers.

Primary timbers included solid mahogany and flame mahogany veneers, often accented with boxwood or satinwood stringing and inlay. Drawer linings were commonly constructed from oak or pine, fitted with cast brass drop handles or oval backplates.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-cut dovetail drawer joints, hand-planed secondary timbers, and natural signs of wood shrinkage along timber grain. Original brassware will show oxidation, and cabinet bases often display authentic hand-saw marks.

A Georgian sideboard works well as a focal point in a dining room, hallway, or living space. Modern styling often pairs the warm mahogany tone with contemporary abstract art, sculptural lamps, or minimalist ceramic vases to balance historical craftsmanship with modern aesthetics.

Keep mahogany away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent timber movement and veneer lifting. Dust regularly with a clean microfibre cloth and apply a thin layer of natural beeswax polish annually along the grain.
