An okimono is a Japanese decorative table sculpture created for display in traditional tokonoma alcoves, rising to international prominence during the Meiji period (18681912) as metalworkers transitioned from armour making to fine art.

These sculptures were cast using the lost-wax process in bronze or copper alloys, followed by detailed hand-chiselling, engraving, and chemical patination to achieve complex surface colours and textures.

Authentic pieces exhibit precise hand-chiselled detail, organic surface wear, signatures or foundry marks, and depth of colour in the patina rather than a flat, modern chemical coating.
