Miniature Walnut Bracket Clock On Bracket By Page

Status: This item has been sold
Sold by: M. C. Taylor

A rare little clock by William Page of Great Portland Street, London, that looks astonishingly beautiful and made to the 18th century style, typical of this maker.

The eight day duration, 5 pillar, double chain fusee movement with Anchor Recoil escapement and rack striking the hours on a top-mounted, high tone bell. The back plate is engraved with the maker''s signature of ''Wm. PAGE, West End Clock Manufacturer. Gt. Portland St. LONDON''. It is also numbered ''568''.

Behind just a 5'' wide, break-arch brass dial with gilt, cast brass, winged putti corner spandrels and floral Rococo spandrels to the arch, flanking the circular silvered name boss bearing ''William Page London''. The centre is matted and the silvered chapter ring has outer Arabic 5''s, a divided minute track, Roman hour numerals and an inner ring. It also has stylised Fleur-de-Lys half hour markings. The pierced blued steel hands are well-executed.

Contained in a walnut case with an inverted bell top. This has a swinging, cast brass carrying handle and has a small edge moulding to where it joins the carcase. The full-size locking front door has quarter-round side mouldings, glazed and beaded to the dial area and glazed to the upper quadrants. The sides of the case have break-arch glazed and beaded apertures and the rear has a rectangular locking door with similarly glazed break-arch and quadrants. The case is mounted on a short all-round plinth with a moulded top edge and the clock sits upon it''s own matching wall bracket. This is solidly constructed with a moulded top moulding and upside down inverted bell shaped lower portion with an elaborated and moulded bottom.

William Page is recorded working from the early 19th century until 1881. All of his clocks seemed to have been well-made and of a ''revival'' of earlier styles.

This little clock with the added rarity of its wall bracket, is extremely attractive. The colour and patina are particularly good.

Dimensions: The total height of the clock on it''s bracket including the handle is 20''. The clock measures 14'' high (including the handle) x 8'' wide x 5 7/8'' deep. The bracket measures 6'' high x 8 1/8'' wide x 6 1/4'' deep.

Condition: The movement has not had professional attention for a good many years and it is very dirty. It is however working well and keeping fairly good time. The striking is working correctly. The pendulum regulation needs attention and the transit locking block has been removed. It would be advisable to overhaul the movement and make a new locking block. The dial is very good but has slight staining to the silvering. The case and bracket are excellent, the integrity of the construction is sound and both locks are original and working. It is of superb colour and patina.

Price: The price is for the clock in it''s present and working condition. A price and timescale for any work required by the purchaser can be advised upon enquiry.
