Description

A pair of Victorian Staffordshire earthenware hand painted spaniels c1860. This pair are joyously hand painted with the popular chestnut colouring. They have hand painted eyes and muzzles, with gilt collars and chains. They are in excellent condition for their age, with just a one or two minor losses in the colouring visible on the photos, which is not uncommon for the age.

FAQs

Staffordshire spaniels, also known as chimney dogs or wally dogs, became widespread decorative items in 19th-century Britain. Produced primarily in Staffordshire potteries, these seated earthenware spaniels were designed to sit in pairs above hearths on parlour mantelpieces.

These figures were cast in two-part press moulds using earthenware clay. After initial firing, the lead-glazed bodies were hand-decorated with enamel colours, copper lustre, or iron red glazes, and often accented with gilded details on the collars and chains.

Period pieces feature press-moulded construction with hollow interiors, press-marks or small release holes on the base or rear, and natural surface crazing within the glaze. Authentic examples typically display hand-painted variance between the pair rather than mechanical uniformity.

These ceramic figures can be placed symmetrically on a fireplace mantelpiece, arranged asymmetrical on a sideboard, or grouped within a curated collection on open shelving to introduce classic pattern and historical context.
