Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Staffordshire pottery dogs are decorative earthenware figurines produced predominantly in Staffordshire, England, during the nineteenth century. Manufactured in facing pairs, these ceramic dogs were designed as chimney ornaments for Victorian fireplaces and sideboards.

These figures were typically press-moulded from local earthenware clay and fired before being finished with a tin or lead glaze. Details such as eyes, muzzles, and coat textures were subsequently painted using enamel pigments or luster glazes.

Authentic nineteenth-century pieces display small release holes in the ceramic base or lower body, along with hand-painted enamel decoration showing minor age-related wear. They feature soft earthenware interiors and lack modern slip-casting seams.

Arrange a pair symmetrically on a fireplace mantelpiece or console table to add visual balance and historic character to a room. Alternatively, integrate them into a bookshelf vignette alongside framed artwork and leather-bound volumes.

Dust the figures regularly with a soft, dry brush or microfibre cloth to remove build-up from textured crevices. Avoid immersing low-fired earthenware in water or applying chemical cleaners, as moisture can enter fine glaze crazing.
