Lloyd Loom was invented in 1917 by American Marshall Burns Lloyd, who devised a method of twisting kraft paper around steel wire to create a durable woven fabric. The patent was acquired in the 1920s by British manufacturers, leading to widespread popularity across Europe for conservatory, hotel, and domestic furniture.

Traditional Lloyd Loom pieces consist of continuous twisted kraft paper woven over a core of flexible steel wire. This woven material is fitted across bentwood or tubular frames, often combined with glass insert tops and brass fittings on tables.

Authentic pieces feature a completely smooth, continuous weave with no exposed loose ends or splinters. Many original items retain a metal maker tag or paper label on the underside of the frame, and the underlying wire core gives the structure notable weight compared to natural cane or wicker.

These woven tables work effectively as occasional end tables flanking a contemporary sofa, as bedside tables in a bedroom, or within a sunroom alongside natural greenery and linen upholstery to balance structured frames with organic textures.
