Lloyd Loom was invented in 1917 by Marshall Burns Lloyd in the United States, who patented a process of weaving kraft paper wrapped around steel wire on a loom. The manufacturing process was subsequently licensed to Lusty & Sons in Great Britain during the 1920s, leading to widespread popularity across British homes, conservatories, and hotels throughout the mid-20th century.

Unlike traditional rattan or wicker which relies on split cane, Lloyd Loom uses twisted kraft paper reinforced internally with continuous steel wire. This flexible paper yarn is woven into sheets on an automated loom before being shaped over a bentwood or hardwood frame and secured with tacks.

Authentic vintage pieces often feature a metal or paper makers plaque beneath the frame, frequently marked with Lustys Lloyd Loom or patent registration numbers. Additional indicators include a smooth, non-splintering continuous weave texture, continuous wire reinforcement visible where the paper bundle is trimmed, and intact original bentwood frame elements.

A Lloyd Loom table adds tactile interest and warmth when paired with botanical textiles, potted greenery, and natural timber elements. Positioned in a sunroom, reading nook, or bay window, it functions well as an occasional coffee or tea table alongside upholstered armchairs.
