Joshaghan is a town in Central Persia where carpets have been woven since at least the 18th century. More recently, their rugs have been known for the fine hand-spun Kurk wool that they use and for the ubiquitous repeat shrub design, as in our piece. It is indeed very nicely woven with fine wool and natural dyes. The classic design has the nice variation of not having a central medallion. Although there is plenty of variation and complexity in the shrubs, there also appears to be an order to the design. Is there a cosmic message there? Who knows, but this is a very elegant and decorative rug which would work in many settings. It has survived the generations in excellent condition, and has recently been professionally cleaned.
