Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A sarcophagus cellarette is a wooden chest or box designed during the 18th and 19th centuries to hold and cool wine bottles. Its shape mimics classical ancient sarcophagi, featuring tapered sides, a stepped lid, and decorative feet.

Cellarettes were predominantly constructed from dense hardwoods such as mahogany, rosewood, or oak, chosen for their stability. Interiors were historically lined with lead or zinc to hold ice and catch moisture without damaging the wooden exterior frame.

Authentic period examples feature hand-cut dovetail joinery, period brass hardware or key escutcheons, and natural wear or oxidisation to the interior timber and base. They often display hand-carved details like gadrooning or paw feet on original brass castors.

A cellarette functions well as an accent piece in a formal dining room, hallway, or living space. Positioned in an alcove or alongside modern cabinetry, it provides historical contrast and can serve as alternative storage for spirits or dry goods.

To preserve the timber finish, dust regularly with a soft dry cloth and apply a natural beeswax polish twice a year. Keep the piece away from direct sunlight and central heating radiators to prevent the wood from warping or drying out.
