19th Century Rosewood & Brass Writing Slope with Share Certificates

19th century
Description

An attractive 19th rosewood and brass writing slope with lock and key, together with share certificates dating from the 1820s and 1860s for the Western Gas Light Company and Leeds and Yorkshire Fire Office in the name of 'Miss Lucy Makins'.

Lucy Makins was a land owner in Bridlington, York; the land and property owned by Miss Makins is documented in, 'A collection of the public general statutes passed in the twenty-eighth and twenty-ninth year of the reign of Her Majesty Queen Victoria', published 1864, pages 115-116.

The writing slope boasts delicate brass inlay to the top and front with fine star detailing to the corners, together with campaign style brass handles to the sides. The box opens to reveal a plush purple velvet lined interior with two glass inkwells. Each side of the slope lifts to reveal a compartment beneath.

The box does lock but the mechanism is a little sticky; the lid does not fully close as a result. There is a small area of lift to the brass inlay to one side (please see photographs) but otherwise the inlay remains in a fine condition throughout.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
