A Fine Pair of 1930s Silver Sauce Boats

1920 - 1940
For Sale by Lantern Antiques
Description

A superb pair of silver sauce boats made in 1935, by the excellent Goldsmiths and Silversmiths Co. 112 Regent Street, London. Made from a heavy-gauge silver they weigh 380 grams. In the Georgian style, these have a double c-scroll handle, shaped apron edging and very pretty hoof feet, with well-cast, foliate shoulders. The hallmarks are exceptionally crisp and very clear showing the scarce, George and Mary Silver Jubilee stamp. Each piece bears the maker's inscription on the underside. There are no personal engravings and there never have been. In my opinion these pieces have had little or no use, they are in excellent, antique condition, with no damage, repairs or losses.

Length from handle to spout: 15.2 cm (Approx. 6 inches)

Width: 9cm (3.5 inches)

Height: 8cm (Just over 3.25 inches)

Combined Weight: 380 grams

Declaration

Lantern Antiques has dated these 1930s Silver Sauce Boats to the 1930s.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

First introduced in early 18th-century Britain, silver sauce boats were designed specifically for serving gravy, warm sauces, and melted butter during formal meal courses. By the 1930s, silversmiths frequently produced Georgian revival styles featuring classic three-legged bases, shell motif feet, and flowing scroll handles.

Traditional sauce boats were crafted primarily from solid sterling silver (925 parts per 1000 pure silver) or high-grade electroplated nickel silver. The body was raised from silver sheet metal, while components such as the scroll handles, spouts, and decorative shell feet were cast separately and soldered into place.

Authentic British silver items of this era feature complete hallmark sets stamped into the metal, including a makers mark, the lion passant for sterling purity, an assay office symbol (such as a leopards head for London or anchor for Birmingham), and a specific date letter representing the precise year of manufacture.

Beyond their functional dining purpose, silver sauce boats serve as elegant decorative accents when placed on a dining room sideboard or exposed kitchen shelving. They can be displayed as a matching pair alongside crystal glassware or used creatively as small vessels for fresh botanical sprigs.

Maintain silver items by washing them in warm, soapy water immediately after use to prevent corrosion from acidic foods, and dry them thoroughly with a soft cloth. Routine tarnish removal should be performed using specialised silver polish and cotton wool, storing items in anti-tarnish cloth bags when not in use.
