Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Sauce boats, also known as gravy boats, became prominent in European dining during the early eighteenth century. Designed to hold and pour warmed sauces or juices at the table, they evolved from heavy, double-handled vessels into lighter, single-handled pouring jugs resting on three feet or a pedestal base.

Authentic period sauce boats are typically raised by hand from sterling silver sheets or crafted from electroplated nickel silver. Components such as scroll handles, spout lips, and shell-capped feet were cast separately and soldered onto the body before receiving hand-engraved details or punch hallmarks.

Look for stamped hallmarks, which typically include a makers mark, purity mark (such as a lion passant for sterling silver), assay office mark, and date letter. Authentic pieces often show subtle hand-hammering marks on the interior surface and wear consistent with age around high-friction areas like the feet and spout.

Beyond formal table service, an antique silver sauce boat can be styled on a dining room sideboard or kitchen shelving unit as a polished metallic accent. It can also serve as a catch-all dish for smaller items on an entryway table or function as a unique Planter for small greenery in a curated vignette.

Maintain silver pieces by polishing them periodically with a soft cotton cloth and specialized silver polish to prevent oxidisation and tarnish buildup. Wash gently in warm, soapy water after use, avoiding harsh chemical abrasive sponges, and dry immediately to avoid water spotting.
