A Fine Golden Oak Writing Table by Johnstone Jeanes & Co.

19th century
For Sale by Culvertons
Description

The quality of this two-drawer golden oak writing table is excellent, but that's not particularly surprising, as the makers are Johnstone Jeanes & Co, one of the most highly regarded cabinet making companies in 19th Century London. Based in New Bond Street, these celebrated makers are best known for their collaboration with Robert Jupe. Between them they designed and made an ingenious round dining table, its circumference increasing in size as extra leaves were inserted. This writing table may not have a complicated mechanism, but it does have superior oak drawer linings and crisp hand-cut dovetail joints, its original handles, locks and castors. This handsome table has been professionally restored, and a top-quality full leather hide inserted and hand-coloured to compliment the golden oak exterior. Standing at the correct height and with the recommended 62 cm (24.4 inches) legroom, this table is both comfortable to work at and large enough to accommodate a computer and a range of peripherals.

Dealers Notes

Whenever possible Culvertons undertake the carriage of items within London and the home counties. Professional, competitive and trusted couriers and shipping companies are engaged for deliveries for the remainder of our customers. Smaller items, when instructed, will be carefully parcelled and securely sent by the carrier.

We strive to accurately describe and illustrate our stock on the 'Selling Antiques' website. However, we understand that it is not always possible to judge from photographs how an item will look in the home or garden. For this reason, if notified within seven days from the date of delivery we offer a full refund (less any agreed carriage costs) once the item has been returned in the same condition as it left our premises.

Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Victorian oak writing tables typically feature solid oak construction, turned or fluted legs, and integrated frieze drawers. Produced during the 19th century, these tables often incorporate inset writing surfaces and brass castors for mobility.

Cabinet makers primarily utilised solid English or European oak, paired with hand-tooled leather writing surfaces, dovetailed drawer joints, and brass handles and castors.

Authentic pieces frequently feature stamped signatures or brass maker plates along drawer edges or undersides, alongside hand-cut dovetails and period-correct hardware.

Position the writing table as a functional desk in a home office or library space, paired with modern lighting or contemporary seating to create a balanced scheme.

Clean the timber using a dry microfibre cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish along the grain twice yearly, keeping the piece away from direct heat sources.
